Rurouni Kenshin
🔽 My first fandom! Before I discovered FanFiction.net, I read fic for a few different anime & manga fandoms on Quizilla, but Rurouni Kenshin was the first fandom where I really set out to binge as much fic as I could (learning about a bunch of new terms, like fluff, along the way :D), and that led to me publishing my own for the first time. And the rest is history xD

Later I got into the fandom in earnest in 2009 and started writing Hiei/Kurama (the first slash pairing I'd published fic for!) as well as a series of drabbles.

Peter Pan
🔽 The 2003 Peter Pan live action film was my gateway into seeking out fanfic for Peter Pan, but I've loved the story since I was little, listening to it serialised as a radio play and then becoming obsessed with the Disney version. I've written as many fusions and AUs for other fandoms as I have actual 'Pan-fics', but it all adds up to a lot of time spent thinking about Peter Pan :D

Pirates of the Caribbean
🔽 I discovered Pirates fandom between the releases of Dead Man's Chest (2006) and At World's End (2007), enthusiastically taking up arms in the ship war that raged between Willabeth and Sparrabeth (I was a Willabeth shipper). Later on, I resurfaced to write fic for On Stranger Tides (2011) for the pairing Philip/Syrena.

And yet I was unable to restrain myself from participating actively nonetheless. I will explain. (The Day of Sagittarius, as told by Yuki).

Avengers
- After Dark (Avengers Tower/domestic Avengers fic, Jun 2014) 🔽
Once daylight has dwindled and given way to night, activity in Avengers Tower gradually slows to a lull. The late-night sparring, target practice, baking, team bonding (read: marathon film-watching) and redefining-the-laws-of-physics (and-occasionally-biology) sessions wind to a reluctant close; even superheroes need to sleep.
Above and around and below everything, sleepless and unceasing and all-knowing, JARVIS watches.
Sir has always had unconventional sleeping patterns, if indeed there is ever enough of a trend to classify them as ‘patterns’; JARVIS has a log of every moment of wakefulness and restless unconsciousness, including unintended naps on the floor of the workshop, since the moment he was programmed into existence; so if anyone, he would know. More than any of the others, Sir is the one most likely to be found burning the midnight oil, then the pre-dawn oil, then the dawn oil in frantic, caffeine-fuelled flights of fancy and genius and engineering daredevilry, caught in the throes of an inspiration so strong that no amount of common sense or practicality could ever shake him loose.
However, Sir’s sleeping habits have tended a little more towards the regular since the addition of an individual to the household who not only cares for his well-being, but is strong enough to remove him bodily from the workshop when the situation calls for it. Ms. Potts, however strong her willpower and compelling her arguments, has never been capable of physically forcing Sir to take his rest when it is needed. But she and Captain Rogers between them are able to ensure that Sir has a night’s sleep at least once every seventy-two hours.
Of course, Captain Rogers himself is no stranger to sleepless nights. JARVIS also has a log of every time one of the Tower’s many gyms or sparring rooms has been accessed in the dead of night by one Steve Rogers, shaking from the aftermath of a nightmare about the war, the loss of his friends and loved ones, or a remembered, bone-deep cold. In amidst the maze of sleek, expansive training rooms filled with cutting-edge equipment is a single small room with a battered punching-bag hanging from the ceiling, the lighting soft enough to be easy on eyes that are adjusting from the darkness. Even super-soldier eyes. Captain Rogers channels his overwhelming frustration, anger, grief and loneliness into punch after punch to the bag, which in spite of its unassuming appearance is specially designed to withstand the unrestrained force of a super soldier’s anguished blows.
Ever the considerate team leader, Captain Rogers will do his utmost to avoid disturbing his team-mates on nights where he cannot sleep; but these are the Avengers, and not a one of them can be accused of ordinary nocturnal habits. Each one of them will freely offer to spar with Steve to counteract his restlessness; except for Dr. Banner, in the interests of avoiding an Incident, but he will willingly sit on the floor of the training room in question and offer up simple, mundane conversation or silent company for as long as it is needed. On the nights where he has company, Captain Rogers will relax better, calm quicker, retire to bed more swiftly and rest more assuredly thereafter; so if JARVIS will throw on an unnecessary light, thwarting Steve’s attempts at discretion to attract the attention of a nearby teammate; or if he will subtly adjust the temperature in a room in such a way as to wake a light sleeper and cause them to investigate the source of the noise in the corridor, well, it’s nothing that anyone can prove.
- Stand and Deliver (Highwayman AU, Tony/Pepper, Jul 2014) 🔽
Pepper pressed herself into the seat cushions of the carriage and wished for the ability to disappear. At her father’s stern look, though, she duly straightened her back again, though she couldn’t bring herself to meet the eyes of the man sitting in the seat across from her. Normally Pepper could conduct herself with grace and poise no matter the circumstances, no matter how greatly she longed to relax her posture or speak her mind to stuffy ladies at tea parties or flee from social gatherings where sharp eyes catalogued and assessed her every move. The fact that this situation was finally testing her steely resolve spoke volumes of her dislike for Lord Justin Hammer, the man opposite her, and the match that her father was trying to press them both into.
“Yes, I was saying to your father at the ball,” said Lord Hammer, as if he were simply continuing a prior conversation and not shattering an icy silence of nearly ten minutes, “how exquisitely arraigned you are this evening, Miss Potts. Your gown is magnificent.”
“Thank you, Lord Hammer,” said Pepper stiffly in response to another meaningful glance from her father.
“I realise that a woman of your position must not be accustomed to wearing such finery,” continued Lord Hammer with a smile of utter condescension, and Pepper felt something hot and angry flare up inside her, “but I assure you that you wear it extremely well. I am confident that you will have the opportunity to accustom yourself to it further in the future.”
He was, was he? Pepper was so outraged that she didn’t even know where to begin responding to such a snub. Though it was disguised as a compliment, Lord Hammer had taken pains to emphasise her inferior status, as a mere tradesman’s daughter, compared to his, a landed and titled lord, before smoothly following it up with the assumption that she would “have the opportunity” to continue dressing above her station – no doubt as the honoured recipient of his lavish affections. She opened her mouth to make a reply and her father, clearly sensing that whatever she was about to voice would throw his match-making ambitions into disarray, leaned forward- and then abruptly fell back against his seat, his form limp and his head lolling.
There was a whoosh of disturbed air and Lord Hammer slumped sideways, and from the silken sleeve of his coat there protruded the feathered shaft of an arrow.
Before Pepper could gather her startled wits or even so much as draw breath for a scream, she realised that the carriage had come to a complete stop. She shook her father, desperately trying to elicit a response from him, but none was forthcoming, though she could not see where the injury lay.
“Father? Father!”
The cold metal muzzle of a pistol nudged the back of Pepper’s neck, and she went utterly still. Then came the words that every traveller on a lonely road at night dreaded to hear.
“Stand and deliver. Your money, or your life.”
The words rang out oddly distorted and metallic, and something stirred in Pepper’s memory: fantastic stories overheard at the market on busy afternoons, of a dangerous figure who rode the roads with his face covered by a visor made of iron, divesting the unworthy of their riches before vanishing without a trace. She turned in increments, her skin brushing against the metal as she shifted, but she would be damned to hell if she ended her life like this, cowering away from her aggressor. She lifted her chin defiantly to stare up into a terrifying visage of black metal scored with a grille, below a dark slash where the eyes on any human would be.

Yuri!!! on Ice
- Collector (Otayuri, Feb 2018) 🔽
Inspired by/sequel to Yuuri (on my wall) by Rosie_Rues
Otabek has always tried to ignore the existence of official merchandise featuring himself. He finds its existence flattering, but a bit unnerving, like giving press interviews and being stopped by fans to pose for selfies.
Unfortunately, this becomes significantly harder to do when his official merchandise starts appearing in Yuri Plisetski's bedroom.
---
He finds out later that it started with the poster of him with his gold medal from Four Continents, but it's not the one that Otabek notices first. That poster is on the back of Yuri's bedroom door, which doesn't normally feature in the background of their Skype conversations.
(Yuri had given him a webcam tour of his bedroom once, after they started chatting regularly during the off-season, but that had evidently been before he started... collecting).
No, it's the figurine that first catches Otabek's eye.
Yuri is in mid-rant (Yuri is normally in mid-rant about something at any given time) about something that one of the "incredibly tiny" junior skaters at the rink did to offend him (and Otabek had pointed out the irony of him picking on younger skaters for their height, but it had only caused the rant to intensify), when Otabek catches sight of it on the bookshelf, behind Yuri's ear.
It's tiny, but the familiarity of it snags Otabek's attention, and he does a double-take, leaning forward slightly and narrowing his eyes. The figurine is right at the edge of the camera frame, almost out of shot, and Otabek would bet that Yuri didn't intend for him to see it. But it's also right there in front of the books, in a weird sort of pride of place, mid-spin with one of its little arms raised in the air.
"-Beka! Are you even listening to me right now?!" Yuri demands, and Otabek refocuses his attention on his best friend.
"Why do you have one of my figurines on your bookshelf?" he asks, because he's never seen the point in beating about the bush.
Yuri is struck dumb for a full ten seconds, his mouth hanging open slightly. Otabek is quite tempted to hit the screen capture key and save this moment for posterity.
"Oh, that?" Yuri visibly recovers, trying his best to sound casual. He turns the screen so that the figurine is more clearly in shot. Otabek stares at himself, feeling strange. "Yeah, you like it? It's just a little thing I picked up online, heh. It didn't cost much. It helps motivate me, as a visual reminder of who I need to crush!"
"So, you'll be buying one of JJ next, then?" Otabek responds, deadpan, but he's bantering on autopilot. He knows that those figurines aren't cheap - his sister had bemoaned as much when searching online for an official figurine to show off to her friends. He thinks that one might even be a limited edition.
Why had Yuri gone to all the trouble of acquiring it?
The Strange Case of Starship Iris
- Join the Club, We've Got Jackets (Jun 2019) 🔽
- First, Arkady calls on Violet to use her first aid skills in the kitchen, where Krejjh has managed to burn themselves doing - what? Trying to cook for Brian? Violet is freaked out because she doesn't know anything about Dwarnian biology, but she pushes it down and resolutely remains calm
- Afterwards, Sana comes across her being upset in the corridor, and asks if she is okay. She confesses to having been worried about treating Krejjh, which isn't good when people are depending on you. Sana asks her if she remained calm in the moment, and points out that that is the important thing. Violet feels better after hearing her say that
- Arkady and Sana go to carry out a drop-off with a new, high-paying client who turns out to be trying to underpay them, and things get violent. Arkady and Sana both need treating for injuries, and Arkady needs monitoring for a concussion. Violet volunteers even though she's exhausted, because she's determined to prove herself
- In one scene, they go to an independent clinic on a very rough planet to drop off birth control pills
- Violet strikes up a rapport with a young nurse there, and then gets caught in the cross-fire as a Regime-backed group of "protestors" attacks the clinic
- Violet manages to help the nurse but is injured in the process. Sana and/or Arkady comes to get her out and she keeps apologising for being a liability
- Arkady tells her that they'll always come and get her, but Violet assumes that it's out of obligation/because they need her as a medic
- She avoids the rest of the crew for a day or two, claiming to need rest
- Finally Sana comes upon her in the mess hall and asks her what her clothes size is. Bemused, Violet tells her, and Sana cheerfully tells her that they're about to call in on a market that has all the materials she'll need to make Violet a jacket
- Confused, Violet follows Sana and an oddly cheerful Arkady to the market. They have a pleasant shopping trip, but Violet is waiting for the other shoe to drop the whole time
- Back on the ship, Violet finally voices her confusion about the fact that Sana would want to make her a jacket. For once, Arkady is the one to speak up and say that of course she deserves one (in an awkward way xD)
- The whole crew chimes in to let Violet know how much they appreciate her. For a long moment Violet thinks she's going to burst into tears, but instead she lets the feeling settle, and smiles at everyone, and lets Sana take her measurements for the jacket
The story of how Violet got her official Rumor Crew jacket. Violet notices that all of the other crew members have matching jackets, and asks what they're for. Jeeter replies cheerfully that they're "official" crew jackets, and that they'll need to get her one now that she's officially a crew member.
Arkady seems sceptical, and Sana says that they'll need to get the materials from a specific market, which Violet interprets as a rejection. She makes up her mind to prove herself to the crew by being indispensible.
(This later became a ficlet of the same name in my From the Archives collection)
--
Since coming aboard the Rumor, one thing Violet has learned is that clothing choices among the rest of the crew can be fairly eccentric.
Krejjh favours bright colours, and the more horribly they clash with purple skin, it seems, the better. They also delight in tacky designs, outrageous slogans, and accessories worn in completely the wrong way.
Brian still dresses like a broke grad student, while Arkady - however much she might deny putting effort into her appearance - elaborately crafts a kind of "1950s rocker chick" look, complete with artfully torn clothing and dark makeup. Sana's attire varies depending on the occasion; she wears heavy workboots, cargo pants and a wide yellow toolbelt while she's acting as a mechanic, but the rest of the time, will wear flowing skirts and scarves, earthy tones and dangling jewellery.
The general oddness of everyone's sense of dress is why it takes Violet some time to notice the jackets. She thinks it was Krejjh who wore one first: it was clearly handmade, with brightly-coloured patches stitched down the sleeves, and so Violet had chalked it up to another of Krejjh's unusual clothing choices. When she spots Brian wearing a similar jacket, she doesn't think anything of it; it would be just like him and Krejjh to wear matching outfits.
Even when Violet sees Sana wearing one, it doesn't quite click; instead she thinks that this must be some fashion trend that she missed out on while she was shut up in a government lab on New Jupiter.
It's only when she sees Arkady wearing one that she realises this is not in fact a fashion thing, but a Rumor crew thing.
Violet isn't sure why that realisation suddenly makes her feel so lonely. The crew of the Rumor has been flying together for - more than a year now. Multiple years in the case of Sana and Arkady. She's only been part of that group for a matter of weeks, not counting the six(?) days she spent in Cryo at the beginning, which she wasn't exactly conscious for. Of course she wouldn't qualify for a special jacket yet.
She knows it's her anxiety brain talking when a voice in her head insists that this is just another place she doesn't belong, that the others are just being nice to her because they feel sorry for her, or feel obligated; that she'll never really be one of them. Rationally, she knows this.
Wooden Overcoats
- Huddling for Warmth (Chapyard, Nov 2019) 🔽
"Are you sure you're going to be all right staying the night at Funn Funerals?" Antigone asks doubtfully as she prepares to leave the funeral home to spend the night at her girlfriend's. "It's meant to get very cold tonight, and the insulation here isn't the best."
"We'll be fine, Antigone," Eric tells her again, giving her his best reassuring smile. Once upon a time it would have made her blush and get flustered, but she must be building up an immunity, because she just squints sceptically up at him. "This is Rudyard's home, and it's only fair for us to stay here some of the time. Besides, I like it here."
"You heard the man," Rudyard chimes in importantly from where he's playing what looks like a game of chess with Madeline. "Stop fussing, Antigone. It doesn't become you."
"Oh, I rue the day I ever tried to look out for your wellbeing," Antigone growls before making one last appeal to Eric. "Look, it's not that I don't appreciate the gesture, Chapman. It's very nice. But tonight of all nights, I think you'd be better off across the square. You know our heating hasn't worked in months, right?"
"I can take a look at that-" Eric begins, but Antigone shakes her head.
"Georgie already tried. And she's great at fixing central heating."
That takes the wind out of Eric's sails a little, but he rallies. "We'll have plenty of blankets. You and Rudyard cope somehow, don't you? During the winter?"
"Well, I've spent most of my life in a mortuary," Antigone reminds him. "I'm pretty used to low temperatures. And Rudyard..."
She stops and presses her lips together. "Just think about it, okay? If you go over in a couple of hours, you'll be there before the worst of the frost sets in."
"We will think about it," Eric promises her, seeing it as the best way to put her mind at ease. Antigone doesn't look convinced, but she says goodbye to both of them and sets out for Georgie's house.
"Checkmate, Madeline!" Rudyard announces triumphantly as the front door of the shop closes. His opponent responds with a barrage of indignant squeaking. "What? Yes it is, because if you move that way then... oh, I see. Right. I suppose you have a point. Well, it was very nearly checkmate, which makes me very nearly the winner. Let's see you come back from this!"
Eric smiles and drops a kiss onto the top of his boyfriend's head. He likes to give Rudyard these little bits of drive-by affection, little reminders that he's loved and cared for. In the very early days of their relationship, Eric was worried about the fact that Rudyard never visibly reacted to them, thinking that he wasn't the tactile sort. So he stopped. Rudyard spent a week acting curiously on edge and upset before he finally demanded to know whether he'd done something wrong.
