Author’s notes: My First Crossover Fic! XD ⇐(I like that smilie) Eheh….now you know what goes on inside my warped little mind, especially during long car journeys.

Word has just picked a thousand holes in what I just wrote. I hope no one reading this fic is an English teacher, because it is fraught with grammar mistakes. Ah well…

Disclaimer: Man, doncha just get sick of writing these? It’s not like any of us fanfic writers are ever gonna OWN an anime…If we did, why would we be writing fanfics? It makes no sense.

“Oh look, it’s snowing again,” I commented to myself as I looked up at the pale grey sky from which the first flakes were just beginning to fall. Annoyingly, the snow wasn’t settling – except on me, turning me into a walking snow-girl as I made my way towards the main school building. Around me, other people were trying to scoop enough snow off the nearby plants and window ledges to have a decent snowball fight. Some luck.

“Oh look, it’s snowing again,” observed Kurama with a smile.

“Hn. This endless snow,” said the fire youkai next to him, taking in the scene around them with no expression on his face. Droves of students who took the bus to school every day were walking across the field, some stopping to throw snow at each other on the way. Secretly, Yusuke Urameshi, stopping for a minute to fall behind his friends, gathered up enough snow to make a large snowball, then hurled it at the tall man in front of him. Kuwabara stopped dead as the freezing snowball hit him in the back of the neck. “URAMESHI!”

Yusuke grinned innocently until Kuwabara tackled him down onto the grass, wet with melted snow. Soon they were wrestling on the ground, while Kurama grinned in amusement and Hiei rolled his eyes and said, “Hn.”

As I got further across the field, I noticed two big senior students with huge lumps of snow in their hands, advancing on a small nerdy-looking guy in front of me; a second year at most, definitely younger than them. I frowned, hoping I was mistaking their intentions, but sure enough they crept up behind him and pelted him with snow, malicious grins on their faces. The guy stumbled backwards and fell over, snow in his face and packed behind his glasses. The goons just laughed at him and I glared, wishing I had a snowball to hand.

Only a few seconds after I had thought this, I felt something cold and powdery in my hand. What the… I looked at my hand, and there was a small snowball forming in it. How did I do that? I watched, and it seemed the snow falling from the sky was gathering in my hand somehow, making a ball.

I didn’t waste any more time trying to figure it out, as the bullies were probably about to leave. Not leaving time for myself to have second thoughts, I shouted,

“OI!”

One of them turned round at the shout, and I hurled the snowball with all my might, and with more accuracy than I knew I had, straight into his face.

YES!!!! Bulls-eye! I don’t believe it!

A triumphant grin spread itself across my face, which faded slightly as the bullies began to advance on me. Ah well, at least I’d had my fun.

“You lose, Urameshi! Give up.” Kuwabara had his friend pinned to the ground. He rubbed wet snow in his face.

“Ok, ok, just get off me.” Kuwabara let up and Yusuke got up, brushing snow off himself. Suddenly he noticed something out of the corner of his eye and turned to see two big guys with snowballs advancing on a little guy – it was obvious they were picking on him.

“Would ya look at that,” he said in disgust. Kuwabara turned to see too.

“They should really try picking on someone their own size,” he commented. Yusuke watched the bullies attack the smaller kid with the snowballs, and scowled.

“Bullies. Can’t stand ‘em. Friggin’ cowards.”

Meanwhile, Kurama had noticed something the others had missed. In his mind, he contacted the telepathic Hiei.

[Hiei, look at that.]

[Ice demon.]

[What is she doing with the snow?]

Yusuke smacked his fist into the palm of his other hand. “Reckon they’ve got something coming to them.”

“Shall we be the ones to give it to them?” suggested Kuwabara.

“Why not.”

They started forward, but Kurama said, “Wait,” his eyes fixed on the girl behind the bullies.

“What?” asked Yusuke, but just then a shout rang out.

“OI!”

Yusuke wheeled round to see what the others had been watching – just in time to see a snowball hit one of the big guys straight in the face.

“Oooh! That’s gotta hurt!” said Yusuke gleefully. But then the two began to turn on their attacker.

“Okay, now it’s time to help out,” Yusuke decided. Kuwabara agreed.

I froze like the snow I’d just thrown as the two advanced upon me. Half my brain was yelling at me to run, the other half was saying it would be cowardly, and I ought to stay put. So, racked with indecision, I stayed still.

“Hey, did you just throw a snowball at my friend?” asked one menacingly, with a tone of voice which told me the answer had better not be yes.

“Uh….” Yet again: a dilemma. Should I deny throwing the snowball? But they wouldn’t believe me. Yet if I said I did, I was sure to get beaten up.

Thankfully, I was saved from having to make that decision by a voice.

“Why don’t you try picking on someone your own size?”

I jumped, and spun around. I hadn’t even heard anyone come up, but suddenly two boys were standing right nearby. One had black hair, the other was way tall with ginger hair. The thugs looked them up and down.

“Guess I shouldn’t bother with a shrimp like you then,” smirked one of then, sizing up the black haired guy.

“I wouldn’t be so sure,” replied the black haired guy confidently, and then punched him.

It was a really hard punch, straight to the gut. The guy went right down, completely and utterly winded, as his friend stared on in disbelief.

“Now, now, Urameshi,” said the ginger guy with a straight face, “pick on someone your own size.” He went up to the second crony and made a big show of measuring him with his hand. “You seem to be about my size,” he concluded, and then floored him with a well-placed right hook.

My ‘saviours’, their work done, turned to me. “Are you all right?” asked the guy called Urameshi, unnecessarily.

“Of course,” I said simply. “They didn’t touch me.” I regarded the boys with some suspicion. Most of the guys I knew were, to put it plainly, pricks. “Who are you?”

“Yusuke Urameshi, and you’re welcome,” said the black haired guy.

“But I didn’t thank-” I began, and then realised. “Oh, ha ha. Thank you for, what should I say, ‘rescuing’ me. I have to go now, I’m late.”

“Hold up,” said Yusuke, as I turned and began to walk away. “This is Kuwabara, by the way. How did you do that thing with the snowball?” he added casually, as if he were asking me for a recipe or something. I froze in my tracks. Did he see that? What do I do?

“What thing?” I asked innocently.

Suddenly two more boys were approaching us. They seemed to know the first two. One had red hair and the most beautiful green eyes I had ever seen, and the other one had black spiky hair, and his eyes were piercing and red.

“Whoa…who are all you guys?” I asked nervously. I’m surrounded!

“Oh, we’re just new here,” said the red haired guy. “I’m Kurama, and this is Hiei.”

“Hn,” was all Hiei said.

“Articulate,” I commented. The boys looked surprised, and then laughed. Hiei looked annoyed.

“Say, do you want to come someplace with us after school?” asked Yusuke. I was alarmed to say the least.

“No thank you,” I declined quickly, and walked off, breaking into a run as the bell rang.

Kurama, Yusuke, Hiei and Kuwabara watched the girl go.

“We didn’t even ask her her name,” said Kuwabara. He hit Yusuke over the head. “Baka! You scared her off!”

I didn’t, your ugly mug did,” retorted Yusuke, and the two began fighting again.

“It appears we’ll have to do this the hard way,” commented Kurama, watching the girl reach the other side of the field.

“Hn,” agreed Hiei.

Chapter 2

Author’s notes: Right, now on to the next chapter of the story! As ever, I have a zillion trillion plans for the rest of the story, and none for the beginning bit. But I made myself write this, so that I can get on to the good part.

Disclaimer: Why would I ever own Yu Yu Hakusho?

I ran the rest of the way across the field, determined not to be late for Registration. I knew I wouldn’t be once I started running, because I was a fast runner, and managed to reach my form room just as the bell stopped ringing. I was only a teeny tiny bit breathless, having run up the stairs to get here, not to mention the bag on my back was heavy.

I answered my name to the register and then sat down on the desk I always sat on, dumping my bag on the chair. After Registration I managed to make it through the tedium of assembly by daydreaming about what I was going to do over the Easter holidays, which were coming up soon.

Coming out of assembly, I saw the four boys from the morning’s bullying incident, walking towards their lessons. The black-haired one and the tallest were squabbling again. What were their names again? Oh yeah, Yusuke and Kuwabara. And who was the redhead? …Kurama - that was it.

Just as I thought that, Kurama noticed me and smiled, raising a hand in greeting. Despite my own rules about not reacting to any boys (just because all the ones I knew were self-centred jerks) I smiled and waved back. He seemed nice. At least he hadn’t asked me out for a dare or anything.

The new boys were attracting some strange looks, mostly because of Kurama’s bright hair and Hiei’s gravity-defying style, not to mention his angry red demon-like eyes. And also a lot of admiring and adoring looks from girls. Hey, I had to admit, they were all really cute, even Kuwabara had…some potential. When Kurama waved at me, some girls I knew vaguely from my year and form group immediately rushed over to me.

“Do you know him?” one of them asked incredulously. I shrugged. “We’ve met.”

“He’s so fit!” another one cried. “I’m going to ask him out.”

Mentally I rolled my eyes at the shallowness of these girls. They didn’t even know the guys! They really seemed to have one-track minds.

“Good for you,” I said expressionlessly. She turned to me.

“Aren’t you going to ask him out? He seems to like you,” she observed, regarding me as if I was some sort of competition. I forced a laugh.

“Yeah, right. I don’t want a boyfriend,” I said disdainfully. They looked astonished. “Why not?” asked Katie, a girl from my French class.

“I have better things to do with my time than go out with boys,” I replied.

“Like what?”

Anything.”

“This place is a lot bigger than our last school. We could probably get lost here,” commented Yusuke, looking around at the red brick buildings the school seemed to specialise in.

“Hn. Speak for yourself,” said Hiei in his emotionless voice.

“I’m surprised you remember what our last school was like. We were hardly there for any time,” said Kuwabara.

“Yeah, well you don’t remember anything, bird-brain,” replied Yusuke, prompting another long bout of childish insults.

Kurama meanwhile had spotted the ice demon from earlier and waved at her, smiling in a friendly way. “It’s funny,” he said to his spiky haired companion, “she doesn’t seem to know she’s an ice demon at all.”

Hiei ‘hn’ed. “Of course the ningen doesn’t. It’s up to us to let her know.”

“She’ll need training,” Kurama mused thoughtfully. “Who knows, she might have quite some potential.”

“I doubt it.”

The day went as normal. It seemed boring and tiresome after what happened in the morning, and yet it was sort of a relief. I didn’t want to be confronted by bullies again, or anything like that. Sitting by myself at lunch, I noticed the four new guys sitting at another table. Two of the girls I spoke with earlier went and sat at the table, and a third pulled up an extra chair at the end. Then all three began some serious flirting. Even though I was totally naive when it came to anything to do with love, or romance, it was easy to tell.

I finished my lunch but stayed sitting, watching the three guys’ reactions with interest. Hiei remained silent and unresponsive, while Kurama treated the girls politely, but it was clear he wasn’t interested. Yusuke was flirting back, but then I heard Kuwabara, who seemed annoyed to be left out, remind him that he already had a girlfriend. Kayko, or Keiko, or someone. I laughed to myself at that and then got up, taking my tray to the conveyor belt and going back to walking aimlessly around school, on my own. I didn’t really have anyone to hang out with.

After school the team managed to locate the ice demon they’d met before. It was quite easy to tail her, as she was making her way back across the school field along with the hordes of other students who took the bus.

“So we have to do this, huh?” said Kuwabara. It was a sort of rhetorical question – they all knew that since the girl wouldn’t come with them of her own free will, and they didn’t blame her, they had to force her instead.

Met with silence, Kuwabara continued, “It’s not her fault she’s an ice demon.”

Kurama spread his hands. “She needs training. I’m sure she’ll understand, in time.”

“Still, this really doesn’t seem right,” agreed Yusuke, his eyes narrowed as he watched the girl in front of them.

Kurama, troubled, said nothing.

I was crossing the school field for the second time that day, my eyes on the ground, when I was surprised by Kurama speaking to me. I raised my head, not having heard him approach. He was just there in front of me, and I wondered how I hadn’t heard him before.

“Hi,” he repeated, smiling as usual. “Do you take the bus too?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “Every day.”

He laughed, although I hadn’t said anything especially funny. I supposed it was my bored tone that amused him, so I smiled too.

“Listen, I didn’t get your name earlier. What was it?” he asked.

“I’m Riv,” I replied, preferring to introduce myself with my nickname.

“That’s a nice name,” he complimented me, and before I could thank him, went on,

“I’m really sorry about this, okay?”

“About wh-” I began, confused, but before I could complete my sentence, something hit me really hard from behind, and everything went black.

Chapter 3

Author’s notes: Hmmm…. Something gives me the feeling that I won’t be able to excuse my lack of updates no matter what I say. So I’ll just get on with writing.

Disclaimer: Why would I ever own Yu Yu Hakusho?

“Nice hit, Urameshi,” commented Kuwabara. Yusuke shot him a glare.

“I’m not proud of it. Come on; let’s get her to the portal.”

All four checked to make sure none of the other students had witnessed the event. Miraculously, none had. So they put Riv on Kuwabara’s back and walked in a different direction to the one they had been heading in.

Once they were out of sight of the school, Yusuke flipped open some sort of high-tech communicator.

“Hey,” he spoke into it. “We got her. Can you open up a portal?”

There was an otherworldly doorway open in front of them within moments, and the four stepped through and into the Spirit World.

The first thing I knew of when I woke up was an agonizing headache. I opened my eyes slowly. What….what’s going on? Did I fall asleep? I wondered. I’d never fainted or been knocked unconscious before, so I wasn’t sure what had happened. Gradually I realised that someone was carrying me on their back. Groaning, I put a hand to my head.

“Hey, she’s awake,” I heard someone say. Feeling the person carrying me stop, I began to focus and take in my surroundings.

I was in some sort of corridor. From my high position I could see Yusuke, Kurama and Hiei. And Kuwabara, whose back I was riding.

What the heck…what are they doing here? What am I doing here? I decided it was question time.

“What the heck is going on here?”

The boys looked at each other as I glared down at them. Yusuke shrugged.

“I suppose an explanation is in order…”

“Dead right.” He looked uncomfortable, and Kurama stepped in.

“You must understand that we didn’t want to harm you. We were acting under orders…”

I frowned and then realised that one of them must have knocked me out. “Oh, really?” I asked coldly. “And I suppose that makes it all better. What the hell did you want to go and knock me out for?”

“You see, the thing is, Riv,” Yusuke explained, “You’re an ice demon. We’ve brought you here to the Spirit World so you can undergo training, and develop your powers.” He stated it as if it was completely believable, and left me just staring at him.

“Oh, come on,” I said, rolling my eyes. “You expect me to believe that? I’m far too used to that kind of cruddy joke. Hey – let me down.” I kicked Kuwabara a couple of times, and he allowed me to slide to the ground and stand on my own two feet.

I used my new perspective – eye level for Yusuke and Kurama, shoulder height for Kuwabara, and the top of his hair for Hiei, to glare at them all anew. I noticed from this position that Kurama had the most pretty green eyes I had ever seen – on a girl or boy – but not allowing myself to become sidetracked, I folded my arms and assumed an ‘I’m waiting’ expression.

“It’s true,” Kurama assured me. “If you don’t believe us, just follow us. We’re taking you to see Koenma, or King Enma Junior.”

They all started to walk down the corridor, Kurama looking back at me. I followed, frowning.

“King Enma Junior? As in the King of Hell Enma? Oh, yeah right.”

The four Spirit Detectives led Riv down the corridor. Yusuke and Kuwabara were already picturing the ice demon’s reaction to finding out that the esteemed Koenma was in fact a chibi, and sniggering to themselves. Kurama looked back. Hiei was walking along with his hands in his pockets and a look of bland boredom on his face. Riv tailed along at the back of the group, surveying the surroundings sceptically, no doubt trying to figure out where they ‘really’ were.

Presently we arrived in Koenma’s office. I stared as Yusuke pushed open the door and a load of noise greeted us. We entered, and I took in a large room with hordes of guys that looked like devils – if they were telling the truth, demons – rushing around and shouting stuff. Just then my attention was distracted by a strange sight, and I burst out laughing, pointing.

“Look over there! It’s a baby sitting in an office chair!”

Yusuke and Kuwabara grinned, and Kurama smiled. “That’s Koenma,” he told me as we approached the desk.

What?” I cried, staring at the chibi with the pacifier in his mouth, sitting behind a desk surrounded by mounds of paperwork.

“Nuuuh…..” I said disbelievingly. Yusuke and Kurama cracked up laughing at the annoyed expression on Koenma’s face, and even Hiei managed a small smirk.

“Oh, man…” Yusuke laughed. “Never gets old….”

“This is Riv, the ice demon,” Kurama introduced me. I raised my eyebrows.

“Can he understand you?”

“Yes, and reply, thank you very much,” said Koenma shortly, surprising me. “I’m really a lot older than I look.”

“I’ll bet,” I said. “Nothing makes sense in this crazy world. You say I’m an ice demon?”

Koenma nodded. “Yes, and we’d like to put you on one of our teams. You will learn to fight and control your ice powers, and in time, go on missions.”

“You’re offering to train me? Fine by me,” I shrugged. “I might as well enjoy this dream, for as long as it lasts.”

“I can assure you, this is no dream. Kurama will show you to your room. I’m putting you with team Deweare. You will train with them, and eventually go on missions with them.” He nodded to Kurama, who smiled at me and opened the door for us to go out.

Riv followed Kurama along a new corridor, looking to right and left. All the corridors looked the same; it would be easy to get lost here.

“So are you a ‘demon’, then?” she asked, looking at Kurama.

“Yes, I’m a fox demon,” he informed her. “Also, Hiei is a half fire, half ice demon. Here we are.” In no time at all, they had reached a long row of doors.

“Your room’s this one,” he said, opening a door for her. “Your team members’ rooms are these ones,” he gestured around at the closest doors, “and ours are further down the corridor.” He pointed down the hallway and began to walk in that direction.

“Fine, just leave me here. I don’t care,” I said, going into my room.

“I’m here if you need anything,” he replied.

“Yeah yeah…”

Chapter 4

Author’s notes: *hides*

Disclaimer: I am not worthy enough to own Yu Yu Hakusho….

I closed the door behind me by pressing my back against it, and looked around the room approvingly. “Hey, nice,” I said out loud, trusting that no one could hear me.

The room was a little on the small side, but that didn’t bother me. There was a single bed pushed against the far wall, and a large window overlooking what I assumed to be the training grounds. On the left hand side was another door; one which led, I discovered, to a little white bathroom.

I crossed the room in a few steps and sat down on the bed to think with a frown. Why would these people – this ‘Koenma’ guy and all the people he had under him (which seemed to include Yusuke and his friends) – want to keep me here? Give me a room and everything? This place was like a huge hotel, but free. There had to be a catch. A lifetime of servitude, maybe?

In any other circumstances I would have dismissed that idea, and the many other possibilities that followed it, as being down to my reading too many books, and watching too much anime. And yet here I was, in a situation which only seemed to belong in a book, or anime cartoon. Despite the unreality of it all, there was still a certain real-ness about what was happening which seemed to rule out it being a dream. So if I wasn’t dreaming, what was going on? I was still very sceptical of the whole idea of me being an ice demon, and needing to receive training; however, as yet it was the only explanation I had been given.

I rested my head on my fist and thought some more. I’d been put with some team… team Delaware or something…. I’d train with them, and go on ‘missions’ with them. This was starting to seem like a spy movie.

I flopped back on the bed and huffed a sigh. So besides being in a totally strange environment, I had to train with total strangers? This just kept getting better.

Not long after showing Riv to her room, Team Urameshi met once again in Koenma’s office, in order to receive their instructions regarding the new ice demon.

“I know Deweare and his team are perfectly capable fighters,” Koenma was saying, “But I have my doubts as to whether they can help Riv to discover the full extent of her powers, and control them. So before she joins the team, I want you four to train her. Teach her to use her powers, and in time she will be able to-” Koenma broke off as an ogre came hurrying over, carrying a stack of official-looking papers. Koenma and the ogre began a lengthy discussion, and after exchanging glances, team Urameshi left.

“So we’ve gotta train her, huh?” said Yusuke, in the corridor outside.

“Evidently,” Kurama nodded.

“Don’t they usually save this sort of grunt work – training newbies and that – for people like… Well, Deweare and his team?” Yusuke frowned, remembering what Koenma had said about not wanting Deweare’s team to train Riv. Kurama shrugged.

“Obviously, Koenma has some idea of Riv’s potential. Maybe she has the ability to become more powerful than we think.”

I was still lying flat on my back, staring up at the ceiling of my room. Another worry was buzzing around in my brain: What about my parents? What would they say, when I didn’t come home after school? They’d be so worried… they’d be phoning all around, trying to find out what happened to me… And here I was, apparently in another dimension. Safe and sound, if a little confused.

I’d pretty much gotten past the supposition that this was all a dream, at this point. It was far too realistic. And here I was, obviously in another dimension – how else to explain the demons, and ogres, and babies that could talk?

Sitting up, I shook my head slowly. It was too unbelievable for words, but… it was obviously real. So, that meant that even if the entire police force of the human world was out looking for me, they wouldn’t be able to find me…

I try not to cry. I really do. But it was too sad, the thought of my parents not knowing where I was, and I had no way of getting back home… As the tears welled up, I turned and buried my sobs in the pillow, my shoulders shaking.

Archivist's Note: I think one of the reasons I failed to continue the fic beyond this point is that I included a little too much realism in my escapist fantasy and then wasn't sure how to resolve it xD
